Why we built this site

Amsterdam holds one of Europe's densest museum clusters, and almost all of it sits inside one canal ring — the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh and Stedelijk facing each other across the Museumplein, the Rembrandt House and the Jewish Cultural Quarter on the old eastern edge, and the canal houses themselves furnished as their merchant families left them. But the city runs on timed entry and pass math that most guides gloss over, and the difference between a good museum trip and a frustrating one is almost entirely in the booking order.

We also lead with the two facts that catch out more visitors than anything else. The Anne Frank House sells every ticket through its own website, released in Tuesday batches six weeks ahead — no platform, no door sales. And the Van Gogh Museum's calendar empties weeks ahead in season, so the slots you book first decide the shape of every day that follows.

Several of the best museums in Amsterdam do not sell tickets through any booking platform, and some of the loveliest simply take a small fee, or nothing, at the door — the Sorolla Museum, the Naval Museum, CaixaForum, Museo Cerralbo and the Templo de Debod among them. We cover them anyway, in full, with no link to click and nothing in it for us. A guide that only mentions what it can earn from is not a guide.
